Spore Capsule Tutorial |
The Spore Capsule is a visualization of data resulting from the Spore Search process. The following tutorial will help to better understand the layout of the Spore Capsule and where to find various data and visualizations within the Capsule. |
A Spore Capsule is made up of 3 sections: |
1) Spore Diagram |
2) Search Sounding |
3) Patent Data |
The Spore Diagram gives a high-level visualization of all the Patents and Publications that encompass a single Spore Capsule. To view the Spore Diagram for a Capsule, click the "View Spore Diagram" link at the very top of the Capsule above the Search Sounding section (Fig. 5) . |
Search Sounding |
The Search Sounding information is always presented at the top half of the capsule and displays various search permutations that make up the current Spore Search. From the Search Sounding, a user can see aggregation numbers for retrieved Patents and Publications in addition to activating the display of Patent Data. To view Patent Data, the user must click any of the displayed green buttons directly next to a search that has a marked checkbox (Fig. 1). Each green button will display Patent Data in the lower half of the capsule for either the Publications or the Patents that were found for that single search permutation. (NOTE: The checkboxes displayed by the Search Sounding are not active and, therefore, updating the "checked" status will not affect the data that is available for viewing.) |

Patent Data |
The bottom half of the capsule displays a list of all Patents and Publications resulting from the current Spore Search terms. The first 2 lines of the Patent Data describe the current list of Patents or Publications. Underneath this, all the retrieved Patents and Publications are displayed one per line. By hovering the mouse over any text in the "Url" column, one can view the abstract for the Patent in the blue popup box that results (Fig. 2). Next, by clicking on the link text under the same "Url" column, the original Patent data can be viewed in a separate browser window (Fig. 3). The Patent Data for each Patent or Publication that is retrieved will also have a PatentMatrix Diagram (PMD) created based on its claims. This PatentMatrix Diagram can be viewed by clicking the text link under the "PMD" column of the Patent Data (Fig. 4). Once again, the PMD is displayed in a separate browser window to allow further browsing of the Spore Capsule without interruption. |
